A letter from Basil McCrea MLA

My Dear Colleagues

On the 22nd September our Party will meet to select a new leader. I write to ask you for your support.

I have chosen to write rather than produce a glossy brochure because the issues involved require careful consideration and your personal assessment. This is not a trivial decision but one of huge importance for it will decide not just the fate of our party, but perhaps the future of politics in Northern Ireland. Last week Alan in Belfast interviewed Basil McCrea MLA and Tom Elliott regarding their leadership campaigns.

Describing Basil as “affable”, “fluent” and “terribly straight forward”, Alan commented; “It neither felt like he was on guard, nor that he was performing for the camera.

“He was very comfortable in his role as the challenger and outsider…. Basil had questions to ask me, and he listened to the answers. He took the opportunity to get another viewpoint – often a good skill for a leader.

“He sounds like a leader, and projects a mood of hope: growing the vote, beating the DUP.”
